Auto train question

Post by marklazarz »

When I use auto train to look for circular gear sets that go from minute to hour, I don't get what I'm looking for.  Specifically, I want a two gear set 8 8/60 64 in order to have small diameter gears but it doesn't show up.  When I look for the same thing in a 3 gear set, I find 8 8 8/60 8 64.  The extra 8T driver meshing with an 8T pinion screws up the rotation but is in essence what I am looking for.  Why doesn't the 8 8/60 64 appear in the two set auto train?  I manually constructed the set and I don't see any interference and the set re-shafts nicely.

Hi Mark:

As you can imagine an algorithm which searchs billions of possibilities requires a bit of playing around with logic, you've
found an elegant bug in the logic I used in the train calculator, but I think Ive solved it and the 8 8 / 64 60 comes out
in selections now. Ill release this in the next update in about a week. Im still searching for the crash with no denominator, hopefully that will turn up by then..
Thx

Thank you Bob and Art, I feel honored to have found an elegant bug!  I meant the numerator, not denominator.  When that field was blank and I clicked on and selected a preset ratio and hit Search, everything stopped.  I restarted and got a message asking if I wanted to reset to defaults and I answered No.  Things were still locked up so the next time I answered yes to set back to defaults and things started working again, including the shading effect that never worked before.

Hi Mark:

Yes, there are times a reset helps. Gearotics framework was new when I started, ribbon panels and such were just invented. These days their much better , but the early framework was buggy as hell and Gearotic shows its effects. Ive tamed most of them
but every once in a while a bug occurs like those ones. Every time for example you click the tooth count the gears are regenerated, so holding  it down interrupts it so much it loses count... that kind of thing..

The gear train calculator error was a bug in the way I step through prime number tables to determine a match
for the various train combination possibilities, when you search for 3, its a lot of choices to check. This calc is very
fast, but I was skipping entries at times when they were exactly the ratio, had it been off by .0001 or so, it would have
showed up.

Anyway, always good to slay another dragon..
