Emco Compact 5 CNC

Post by Mooselake »

I found one of these being offered locally on that big auction site, and made a lowball offer on it (due to a poor picture and description), with no response.  Tracked down the guy and found out there were really two of them, and they'd been sold offline a month earlier.  Drat.  Good thing I didn't click buy it now...

They were late models with the embedded PCs.  I found some older topics on another forum where Art described his conversion of one to Mach (still have it Art?).  Here's a picture for old times sake.

I don't know what I'd really do with it other than trying to learn how to use a CNC lathe (kinda the point of the Emco 5, although it seems like it didn't work in practice for most schools), after I learned how to resurrect it and make it work - doubt the early 80s computer's worth salvaging.  OTOH, knowledge is an end in itself :)

Probably just as well I didn't get it;  too much overestimating spare time, and underestimating how long new (and old) projects really take...
