Beginning Project:Need information

Post by Hwingo »

Good morning Guys:

My cutter came in and I am about to cut a gear TODAY but, I do have several questions.

1. When the program boots, I choose *Circular* for gears. At the bottom olf the screen (under proprieties) there is a field labeled as *WIDTH* and this field is autonatically populated with a numerical value of 0.5. What is width is this?

2. The face width of my gear is 0.800" so I make a conscious effort to assign a value of 0.800" in the field labeled as *Face Width*.

Please tell me what I am to do with the field labeled *Width*.

*Note*:  I am still not receiving notices that posts have been made to threads I have started. I just noticed that several additional posts were submitted to a previous thread I had written. I fear that people, who take the time to offer their help, may *THINK* I am ignoring their efforts and this is certainly not the case nor my intentions.

I have checked all boxes pertaining to "Notify Me". This includes the one directly below the window where messages are written (Additional Options) as well as in the section where I can set up my personal properties. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Harold

Hi:

Good morning Guys:

My cutter came in and I am about to cut a gear TODAY but, I do have several questions .

1. When the program boots, I choose *Circular* for gears. At the bottom olf the screen (under proprieti es) there is a field labeled as *WIDTH* and this field is autonatically populated with a numerical value of 0.5. What is width is this?

This is the width of your tooth. Setting it to .48 will add a 2% backlash , Id suggest .48 or .49 , if you use .50 the two gears will mesh tightly.. most need just a bit , or .48 or so. Try it an on the design screen, hit regen and zoom in to see what I mean. Youll see how much space your creating.

2. The face width of my gear is 0.800" so I make a conscious effort to assign a value of 0.800" in the field labeled as *Face Width*.

This field creates the gear at that face width, but when you create the GCode you will assign a depth to it if in 2.5D, or in 4th axis you can specify a new cutting width. Its not critical when creaetin to have facewdith right except for the visual simulation.

>>*Note*:  I am still not receiving notices that posts have been made to threads I have started. I just noticed that several additiona l posts were submitted to a previous thread I had written. I fear that people, who take the time to offer their help, may *THINK* I am ignoring their efforts and this is certainly not the case nor my intention s.

No worries Harold, some peoples systems react differently than others, hard to get anyone here to take offense. :), Still dont know why
you dont get notifications, I do and most others I think.. Ill check the error logs to see if your email provider is boucing them back..

Thanks Art for your reply. I will go back and generate a new G-Code using .48. Also I will follow your instructions on viewing the differences in back-lash between .48 and .50.

Also thanks for looking into the "no notification issue". It almost has to be something on my end (I would think) since no others on this Forum are having this problem. Strangely however, I have no notification issues on other Forums. If this helps, I am running Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600, and I use Internet Explorer8.

Thanks,

Harold

HI Harold:

I checked the foums error logs, it doesnt show any errors. Unfortunately its a garden variety forum run by the website
provider, so there isnt much I can check. Good luck with the gear. :)
