Hi there,

What advice would you give for getting smooth action from laser cut wood gear chains?

Hi Nic:

Generally you get pretty smooth action from wood gears. Laser cut usually works well in particular as the kerf
from the cut is about right. However, if your cutting non-circular gears make sure you increase the "Tooth Width"
parameter to .51 or .52 to make the tooth hole a bit larger. Watch the sim to ensure teeth dont collide, then you should
be good to go.
If using Circular gears, you may want to reduce tooth width to .49 or .48 as that can give you some backlash ..

Wood swells, so dont aim for tightness, make them purposely a bit loose using the width settings..

Good luck
