Wikipedia has an interesting article on skiving machines, which slice off thin layers.
That Sherline sheer (should that be shear?) bit looks interesting, kinda like cutting on the side of a parting tool. Should be able to grind a regular toolbit to get the same effect since it's only cutting on a small area on the side of the cutter. In the video it looks like a good surface finish. I made a woodlathe tool adapter on the local High School's Jet metal lathe last night, took a lot of polishing to get the tool marks out (but maybe that was the inexperienced operator?).

I don't thinks so, but it may involve Mairzy Doats somehow. It must. I can't get it out of my head now.

It is an interesting technique, cant say I ever haerd of it before..
