Pendulum Basics

Post by marklazarz »

Probably not new to many experienced clock makers but I'm a newbie so I'm excited to share some of my successes.  I made a pendulum bob and a pendulum pivot modeled somewhat after a Clayton Boyer design.  The pivot is a knife point and the bob is weighted with lead shot or BBs.  The pendulum support is simply a 1/4" wood dowel with a flat filed on it and then a shallow V-groove cut into the flat.  I set this thing in motion with about a 3" swing (6" side to side) with a 48" pendulum length and it was still going after a half hour with no additional input.  The bob is adjustable with some threaded rod and the brass tube in the bob keeps the ballast away from the pendulum when the adjustment screw is turned.  Now, if I could only figure out how to keep this thing going with the pallet using a crutch.  If anyone else has some photos of how they did it, please post on this thread.

Mark:

On my wooden clock , I just used a bent piece of wire from the pallet to the rod of the pendulum about 4" below the pivot.
You loosely but a loop of the wire around the rod so that its got like 1/8" of freeplay. This means it can slide up and down with
no real friction, but the pallet pushes the rod with the loop of wire. As in this picture, but where it joins the rod is just a loop
of wire loosely around the rod..
