How do I make the base circle smaller while maintaining the outside diameter?

I want the gear frame? to be wider to accommodate the hour numbers.

Dependsa what you mean by "base circle", try the % settings for Rim % and such in the top panel..

Would Vetrics' Cut to Desktop work, it is much cheaper than the Carve program.

I would have to buy more plans from Boyer in .dxf format.
(or just cut the gear in Gearotic and drill the holes myself)

If you purchased paper plans from Clayton Boyer, e-mail him and ask him to send you a DXF copy, he probably will.

My post may have gotten buried in the rapid back and forths on this topic.

If you have a set of printed plans, take the time to learn ins and outs of the gearotics program..It's amazing how powerful the tools are in Gearotics to create gears even when only vague info is available..

Up to now I've been ignoring the Augie portion of your software because I have no CNC or automated methods.  I concentrate solely on simulations.  As you already noticed my emphasis so far has been on a Chronometer and a tower clock simulation.  I'm working on a video that would highlight the workings of the two simulations.

To add a DXF import/CAD capabilities to Augie would be handy.

A hack to get DXF gears inserted into Gearotics would be to know from a CAD program the overall dimensions/tooth count/shape, or other specs of the gear contained in the DXF  and then use Gearotics tools to match the key parameters using the Calculate (diameter or shaft spacing) to fine tune things.

When I first started a Chronometer simulation project, I had a description of the chronometer and rough scale drawings of gear outlines (see jpg).  I used a simpler program, a gear template generator http://woodgears.ca/gear/index.html, to get an idea of what the gears would look like. After I printed out the gear outlines and overlaid them on the drawings I thought that it would be cool to simulate the mechanism.  That's when I discovered Gearotics and felt it would be a worth a try.

For the tower clock simulation, I had access to the mechanism and was able to measure gear diameters (or sometimes circumferences), tooth counts, shaft spacings, etc. and used the tools in Gearotics to build the simulations.

The resulting simulations are close enough for me to illustrate the workings of the mechanisms.

Bill :

You will see some sort of DXF manipulation facility, in fact the latest Auggie can load GCode or DXF's , let you change them in various ways,
and re-save them as DXF's. (I just havent gotten around to explaining how yet as I'm not yet done that module.

I cant say Ill be able to import a gear for simulation, unfortunately its much more complex than that to deal with the
simulator, it relies on drawing order, angular derivations and such and so it out of the scope of what a user would typically
want to do. However, that having been said, I can see where it would be handy to export your own extrusions for use in Gearotic,
such as glyphs and numbers for dials, and to have drawing capability to make clock faces and such, and be able to export
Gcode to make them if one desires. I find myself already headed down that path.. ( though that's likely to be a long path.. :)

My plan is to blend G code and DXF's in Auggie, and allow drawing of DXF type layers. I will gradually add power and functions
as I find them useful, or by request as the system gets going. Its approaching the time I tend to slow down for the summer,
(though I haven't for the past 2 years, I will be taking some time this summer to stretch and relax a bit more..but youll continue
to see incremental additions to both programs.).

:)

I forgot to add Rocket's name to my repost.

Rocket has printed plans...therefore he has info on gear dimensions, shaft spacings, tooth counts.  Gearotics is a powerful tool that Rocket can use to build the dxf's of the clock...but to do that requires practice with the tools provided in Gearotics and patience to recreate the gears of the printed plan.

Good Points Bill:

I use music as a metaphor, CNC is like learning an instrument. Takes years
and practice.. not to say you cant play a few licks after a bit of practice..

Art and Bill,

Since I am clock building I need "ticks" not "licks", though
I must admit licks sounds okay too.

I have two sets of DXF files from Clayton Boyer.  I guess my
next move is to purchase Cut 2 Desktop so I can make the parts.

When will we be able to import dxf files into Gearotics?

I hope I stay alive long enough to "get" it.

On the light side, here is a photo of my Polaris Slingshot that I
install a turbocharge on last year.

Art,

Create the gear in Gearotic.  Post it and save it to a file.

Set up machine in Universal G code Sender.  Everything works
great except for makes that same cut from lower left corner of
material all the way to center where it starts to drill shaft.
Line of cut is about 10 inches long and ruins an almost perfect job.

Attached G-code .tap and photo of simulation as it was cutting
so you can see the white cutting line all the way to the center....

I am stuck...

rocket man............Thank you....

Are you setting a safe_Z in the settings? Your file is wrong at the start, and Im not sure how your doing it..

If I generate apost for a test gear it starts as

( No Prolog Set )( GCode Objects Begin. )
( Object Spur Begins )
G0 Z1.000
G0 X13.978  Y12.198  Z0.000  A0.000 ------- //this line moves it to the start of cut BEFORE dropping down
(  Shaft Hole path - Inside Profile )
( Tool --: Endmill1mm posted as T0 )
M5
M6 T0
M3 S1750
G1 Z-0.500  F1000.00
G1 X14.102  Y12.209  F2000.00
G1 X14.227  Y12.228
G1 X14.349  Y12.254
G1 X14.470  Y12.288

Your posted file is missing that line.. Are you removing the line? Is Safe_Z set? Ill see if I can se why
that preparation line might not appear.. a setting maybe..

Disregard the previous .tap file.  I messed it up.

Here is the exact file from Gearotic (I did not change anything).

I know I must remove the G43H0 and add a line: G20 for inches.

Attachments:  .tap as is from Gearotic.

I tried to send you the .gth file but it is too large according to rules here.

Thanks....

Rocket:

ahh, thats better.

Attached is a new post processor. Replace the file in your installation folder, the G43H0 will no longer show up.

Just add a G20 to the top, you shoudl be fine. The rest of that file looked good, you got the line cut
because you removed the first move..which was to the center to start cutting..
