GearHeads Corner

Hi guys,
I suddenly have access to a bunch of lasers and potential gearheads, and am looking for a simple wood clock design -- it would be nice to start with a tried and true set of cad files for this first project. I want to hang an example or two on the wall to inspire people to use the equipment to make gears, clocks, and other kinetic sculptures.

There are also some nice 3D printers, CNC wood routers, CNC mills, a CNC plasma cutter, and even an abrasive water jet that may come in handy -- and there a lot of hearts and minds to inspire.

Hi Justin:

The only one Ive published on the site is the Ticker Scimitar. Pretty easy to make
and impresses on the wall. Im in the design stage of a new one for the fall
but it wont be ready for release till XMas I suspect.. depending on progress on a
couple software tools I intend to use for it.

Handy to have all those machines.. water cutter in particular.. :)

Clayton Boyer's plans are sold either as paper or DXF files.  His designs are proven and he has quite a following among wooden clock makers.  I can attest to the fact that his plans are reliable.  Generally speaking, wooden clocks are not the easiest things to build and get running but I think anyone reading this forum can do it.  Although I have not built this particular clock, a good beginner clock would be this one http://lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/Genesispage1.htm.

Markʻs suggestion of the Boyer clock Genesis clock is a good one.  As a challenge,  try looking at the photos on the Boyer website and use Gearotics to create your own DXF files.  With  knowledge of how gear ratios work and a rough estimate of gear diameters based on measurements of the online photos, you should be able to create a model of the Boyer Genesis clock.  If you then order the plans then you can see how close you got to the original design.
