HI Edward:

It isnt currently possible to make them rotate that way, it may be at some point in future, but at the moment all force is projected in a linear
series with fixed shaft locations, it cant handle moving shafts that way..

Hey G'day,

I was ferreting around looking for this feature as well. Arty have you implemented this anywhere yet or its never going to make it? I'm designing or trying to an orrery where you have a gear following a path of a large gear but the large gear is stationary.

Also have you got a tutorial how you went about building this?

Hi Stojan:

It isnt implemented anywhere to have a gear actually move its shaft to go around another.
I cant say it wont make it. During this shutdown Ive upgraded my systems here to Win10
and a much faster computer and Im now toying with what to do as a project for Gearotic.
Ive spent the last couple weeks fixing up the visual items I see wrong in Vexx now that
Im in Win10.
I am toying with some ideas for a recode of the simulator, but I have not as yet concluded
to go there.  Gearotic is getting long in the tooth and Im playing with some idea's as
to how to make its design functions more useful , we'll see how that goes.

Hey Art G'day,

Welcome to windows 10, don't forget to switch things of in windows 10 there are many annoyances, reporting suggestions they want to give you etc. All of which take up system resources and become a total annoyance. If you can avoid it don't use their login rather use your own login locally, if you do use their login they then time your use of win10 so at some point they can start charging or tell you its expired. There are no real apps from their store that one could say are essential to have. So the more you can keep their snout out of your trough the better you will be. The good things windows 10 has is their 3d builder for view stl files obj etc and its free. You should be able to run fusion 360 now as well its probably one of the best cad design programs out their and provided you use it for personal use it remains free.

Enough about win10, if you ever decide to introduce a fixed gear those that like making Orrery's will like it lots. You can always add more crazy gears, with Laser's and 3d printers pretty much a staple in a lot of houses nowadays, I'm sure Gearotic will appeal to more people. You just need to figure out how to play on peoples natural curiosity. How to appeal to the hobby market the face of manufacturing has changed with the hobby market, the backyard producer is back, with covoid19 it will push more people to work from home as well. How to leverage that is the challenge but more and more people will look for software solutions to help them start making stuff from their back yards like my grandfather did many years ago..

I'm sure you will come up with something to challenge you, in the mean time if you need assistance with win10 drop me a line... I've spent a lot of time switching things off that windows deems you should have on lol.

Oh if your already over it having to find things in Control Panel and you would like the one place to find them all ... Make a folder on your desktop called GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}  just cut and paste that. When you make the folder you will have access to all the goodies in one place rather than having to hunt for them. Its just a super user control panel... if its good for the goose its good for us, you won't break anything but it will make life wonderful.

Cheers,

Hey Art,

How you doing with Windows 10? Just curious to hear your thoughts and what you think of it. Have you tried 3d builder yet? or perhaps fusion 360? Both of which are free. Maybe you can leverage 3d builder with Gearotic?

Curious is all.

Hi Guys:

I just got back from a short vacation.

Firstly, thx for that God-mode folder, I wasn't aware of it. Thx also for the suggestions, I like to see such things.

OK, I know Ive been silent for awhile on my plans. I have been using Covid time to learn new coding paradigms
for DirectX graphics, physics and such while I decided on a direction. I have been researching a lot in the last year
or so as I tried to figure a logical path forward for my interests.

I am currently working on a shell of what I hope will be Gearotic4 in the end. It may be renamed several times
before completion.

I have  begun with a program to produce all standardized bolts , nuts and screws according to ISO standard
measurements and options. I will release that program "Nutz&Bolts" when it is working to my satisfaction and producing
triangulated stl's of any bolts.  This will be done using current generation graphics, shaders and materials to ensure
displays will work for a new graphical simulator.  planned for after all gear types are added in future modules. I
have a lot of ideas and coding tests done already for many of the algorithms Id like to attempt.

I never promise before I can deliver if I can help it, but things are looking good for at least a fastener program this year
with a possible physical laws based simulator next year. We'll see what time brings, but I do suspect Win10 and at least a
mediocre video card will be required as I am also now using the GPU processors to aid in the math.

I have already test exported OBJ files that new 3d printers will load with color information and such, so I am hoping to allow
better integration with programs such as Fusion360, which I am also toying with.

None of this will be quick, but it is the direction Im moving in..

Hey Art,

I love the God mode folder as well lol. Its amazing when you look at it and see everything that's there.

As your mentioning 3d printers I'm assuming your refering to fdm printers, I don't know how aware you are of the changes that are happening within the Resin Printer market.
There have been a ton of changes there particularly in the types of resins that are available.

As a by the by, Elegoo Saturn if you look up that particular resin printer, it has a build platform of 7.55in x 4.72 x 7.87 which is huge, no heres the kicker they have sold out already till September and all for under $500.
https://www.elegoosaturn.com/products/e ... 3d-printer

Where it gets exciting is the changes in the types of resins now that are available. You can have a look here.. https://monocure3d.com.au/product-categ ... uff-resin/
When you mentioned your coding for a fasteners program.

This crowd in Australia are producing a Tuff resing High Tensile resin which can be machined and pretty much smacked with a hammer. Perfect now for making fasteners particularly the fancy ones for small projects, modelers are falling over themselves using this product.

I've made fasteners with my FDM printer and they come out ok but you have to sand and manipulate post process to make them suitable.
I have done some small fasteners with resin but they easily shatter and break so not really suitable, I purchased some test bottles of the Tuff product and pretty much smack them with a hammer hard and will not turn to dust.

There is resin now also that is water soluble as well as carbon fiber, ceramic resin etc a lot of product that is all geared to making engineering test models which are much more resilient than FDM.
The resin printers are so much faster than FDM as the build speed for volume is already known, eg if I wanted to print a 7 inch tall bolt it would take say 5 hours to complete, and for arguments sake to do the same with an FDM the time is comparable. The comparison ends there in the building of 1.. If you were to say print 4 your FDM of course the time increases pretty much by a factor of 4. Where as a resin printer if your build volume is say 5 x 5 x 5 as an example whether you print 1 or 20 the build time is 5 hours.

The other advantage of resin printers is that the models you can produce are micron accurate. There is virtually no post processing apart from curing the resin, pretty much no sanding the only places you need to post process is where the supports for your model are.

A couple of pics for you to look at, detail available to you with resin printing and gears designed with Gearotic for the Orrery Im modifying and improving.

As a by the by having an Orrery Gear train would be nice in Gearotic lol....

Cheers and greetings fromt he colonysdownunder.

Steve:

Ive been amazed at the growth of 3d printing in all materials. When gearotic was designed originally not much attention was
paid to 3d printing, but now I think Id like to delve into it more. Just got my second fdm ( anycubic), I may yet get a resin printer as well.
Its not hard to find bolt models to print with nuts attached, I think ID like a table of them to quickly make what I want in
proper spec. Perhaps when Im having trouble finding that missing screw with a torque head I coudl quickly pull one form a table
and print it with spec of modified spec.

Well seeing as you bought and own an anycubic product, I have their smaller anycubic photon resin printer, have a guess what I fell over today my son send me the link.. Check out what anycubic are bringing to the market.

You might want to check out rethreading dies for cleaning up threads, I have a whole drawer full of them that I use regularly on old rusty farm (and other) equipment, they should work even better on plastic.  They're on my all time great tool list :)

Boltotic?  Nutz to you?  Please don't call it "Bolty McBolt Face".  Sign me up!  I could 3D print a 3/4 x 5 tpi part to fix my wife's art fair spinning wheel, kids jumped on it many years ago (the youngest just turned 30) and Nan found out the maker has passed away.  The wood thread guys seem to like 3/4 x 6 tpi so I can't just order a die to match.

Yeah, I have seen all the downloadable bolts, but I found when searching they were all
set sizes and lengths and such. I think I may be able to offer something a bit easier to use
and more versatile with a lot more options for making the exact bolt or fastener I might
want. That and worm gears, it always bothered me I didnt add those as making them was
a holdup, but for 3d models I think they may be handy.
Im still experimenting but Im sure it'll lead me somewhere.. :)

I look forward to it, it will be rather exciting to be able to make a bolt the exact size you want it. Good luck..
