Stacking and linking gears together on a non-linked shaft

Post by Boman33 »

I have physical gears that are manufactured as a one piece, for example, a 42 tooth and a 12 tooth gear.
To simulate, I can stack two gears on a common shaft and link the shafts.
How can I link the two gears together without linking using the shaft.  I have other sets of similar gears on the same shaft.
It is for a gear box.

Clicking on the "Insert image" did not work, presumably I am doing something wrong.

Hi:

Gearotic doesn't allow that possibility. I think it should though so I added that
capability and will post a new release today. Here is the way it now works to do that.

First, when it comes to linkages, when you press "Add Linkage" any gear not currently
under orders to be driven by another object is listed in your selections. This means any
undriven gear can be made to be driven by any other gear.

So, lets take a blank project and add a master gear. It is now the Driver and has
a linkage to the shaft. Adding a pinion to the same shaft slightly overlapped with
the driver makes it look like your example. But, it will show up as driven by the
shaft (which is driven by the master.). Click on shaft and youll see a linkage to spur1.
Remove that linkage with "removelink". Spur1 is now undriven. Select spur (the master)
and click on add linkage. You will see you can now drive spur1 with the master. Select
that and your two gears are linked. You can do this in any project at any time , Im
just using a 2 gear example for simplicity.
The problem you have now is that the system see's an involute driven by an involute
and reverses the pinions direction. As of todays release, there is a modifier that
checks if two involutes centers are closer than involute 2's pitch radius. This will
pretty much always be the case if you place a gear on a gear (unless gear 1 is
very wide faced. ). If so, the slaved gear is locked to its master in terms of rotation.

This should allow you to do as you wish, I should have a new version online in
a few minutes. Ill post under new releases when I do. If this causes trouble
due to gear facewidth, let me know and Ill see what other ideas may work.

Thx

As usual Art, amazing service!
Thank you so much,
After all these years I am still running Mach3 for my laser and Taig CNC mill.
For my custom CNC mill I got Mach4.
Take Care,
Bertho
