Baltic birch is really good stuff but sort of on the pricey side. When making some gear parts for a Ticker I decided to try Home Depot's Red oak plywood that is $29.99 for a 4X8X1/4" sheet. What I did was added three 1/16 alignment holes and then cut out 3 identical pieces on my laser, aligned the holes with 1/16" pins and and glued the three together. The oak look great and seems to be as strong as birch. While you use more wood I think it still cheaper than Baltic birch.
