Hello all,
I, like many others, have been curious as to the drive mechanism involved in David Roy's sculptures.Particularly the ratchet and pawl design. I happened upon a solution the other day, in the form of an expired patent. I hope others here will enjoy reading it as much as I have.

Another interesting thing I found in my research was a post by David's wife. She was answering a question regarding what material is used for the black cables that loop between sections of his sculptures. Turns out they are springs. Extension springs with the little loops snipped from the ends, and several wound together a short distance on the ends to create the length desired. Here's a link to what I believe she was describing.

I hope to construct something soon, I'll be sure to share.

Here is a link to additional drawings of David Roy's sculptures "Aztec" and "Cumulus". If you scroll down the page, you will come to the screen shots of the computer drawings. Of particular interest to me, were the "Aztec" butterfly pawls. If you look closely at the innermost pawl, it has a small green square with an arrow......magnet maybe??
