Kinetic Simulation

Post by marklazarz »

Art:

I like the new Kinematic module but I'm struggling with the user interface and lack of documentation.  I would like to see the attached flywheel rotate clockwise and it's mirror rotate counter clockwise on the same shaft as an aid to designing kinetic sculptures.  I'm sure that it can be done but I need some help.  If you have an opportunity, please provide a step by step guide on how to accomplish this task.  My actual drive engine turns these wheels about 3 times before reversing.  I don't expect the reciprocating simulation is possible but the ability to see the wheels counter rotating at a constant speed would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark:

Ill do a video on just that. I know the docs are slow, my fault as I keep adding rather
than doing video's but I will slow and fill in the gaps now..

Thank you Art.  You may use my DXF file for the video if you wish because I drew it from scratch, i.e. no copyright.  I'm uploading a video to YouTube of the thing running even though it's made from junk wood.  I like the tinkering phase of projects because to me, the journey is as much fun as the destination.  I will post the video here when it's finished uploading.  It will be interesting to see how it compares to the simulation.  Unfortunately my test station is in an area of my shop that has poor lighting for photography but you will get the idea.

not sure if this is what you were looking to do but here is a quick video of two spirials second one being mirrored, going in opposite directions one at 5 and other -10 rpms just for effect

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AWVWqoQhq4

included the mech for importing

notice I decimated to reduce points to 500 for each chain and removed the holes as they are not needed for simulation

Ya-Nvr-No:

Thanks for the mech work.  I modified it to give each spiral a group number 1, unchecked the "Allow Collisions" box, and set the rotation speeds to 20 and -20.  It is more realistic, at least on my screen.  Below find the modified mech and a video of the actual device.  There are so darn many parameters to fiddle with!  I need to find a book titled "Mech's For Dummies".

Ignore the sloppy craftsmanship and the photography, this is a work in progress.

Nice to see it in action, I had to reduce the speed of your mech to about 20% to get the same effect as your build.
Not sure why you and I would get different speed effects. (ART?)

Are you working in Imperial or metric?
I built this in Imperial and also test in Imperial (mostly to keep Art sharp and edgy)  :P

This module is so new that a lot of this is just trial & error, then I wonder; what this will do?
Now ya know why I crash a lot.  ;D

Good to see your getting the hang of it.

Ya-Nvr-No:  I'm working in Imperial with a table size of 24x24.  Your mech was HUGE compared to my table but I got it to look correct at 20 RPM, 100% simulation speed.  Your original mech didn't rotate on my screen, just wiggled a little.  The YouTube videos that you made don't rotate on my screen either, they just oscillate a bit.  Do all the settings of the original mech transfer with the mech or do some have to set by the viewer, for example simulation speed?

Art:  When I try load your mech "ArtBarTesat", everything crashes.

ya it was a real crude video and example
but you picked up the idea well.

my table shows 24x 18y in that video and it does just look like it jitters
Note: sim speed is not transferred

glad you took the mech and flew with it.

Mark:

Tried the bartest here, doesnt crash, are you on the latest version, Ive put out a few duds last week.

Im just uploading a new video showing your vanes and how I simulated them, let me know how trying to
repeat that works for you. Its still all quite new, and Im fighting on many fronts in terms of making it better.

This video will show how to go from loading your dxf to how to simulate it. Hope it helps,

Glad your having fun with it..
Thx

I updated to the latest dev version and now the bar test works.

The video was very helpful, thank you!

I can't seem to get a dxf file to load. It was created in corel draw and exported as dfx (autocad 2008-1013). the units are in inches. The files opens in other programs like delta cad and vcarve demo version.

any ideas?

Hi :

Can you send me the file. ( A work around may be saving the file in Vcarve, then seeing if it will open..)
