Problem placing gears in project.
Re: Problem placing gears in project.
I have done a bit more playing around and now I seem to be getting the same problem with everything but elliptical gears. I have no problems placing an elliptical gear in a project unless it is a 2nd order elliptical then I get a "solid creation failed" error. I don't know if this helps or just muddies the issue.
Thanks for all that you do,
John

John:
I do see in the loaded project that the gears are very strange, their not the right size for
the DP and tooth size, something odd seems to be going on. Id like to work with you to find
out exactly what.
Could you start a new project. Set your settings so that your inch mode, and restart the program.
Go to the spur gear screen and select the default wheel and place it, then select the default pinion.
Do they mesh together on the project screen?
( By the way what version is this your on i the help/about? )
Ive never seen this type of mismatch, almost like its set to inch and mm at the same time for some reason.
Even after loading your project I coudl add gears and they all mesh properly, but for the same DP(15) and tooth count Im getting very large gears..
Im sure we can figure this one out. :)
Thx

Re: Problem placing gears in project.
Art,
I tried what you suggested, I started GM, started a new project, made sure I was set to inch mode then restarted GM. Using the default settings on the spur gear screen I made the wheel and pinion. Unfortunately they do not mesh, their centers are set at 15.7 inches apart, one more inch than last time.
I am running version 4.67 of GM. I have not re-installed yet but let me know if you want me to.
Thanks for all your help,
John

Re: Problem placing gears in project.
Art,
I down loaded the development version, completely uninstalled the older version before installing the new one. Then I tried placing the default spur gears in a project. Still no joy, the gears were centered 15.7 inches apart. Next I tried switching to metric and restarting GM and placing the default metric gears into a new project. Still no joy, the metric gears were 104.5mm apart when they should have been 92.5mm apart.
I did notice that with a fresh install GM the units are set to what ever I left them at with the old install. I though the default was metric but if a uninstall GM when it is set to inches any new install will start out set to inches. Could there be a corrupted config file somewhere that is not getting removed when I uninstall?
I really do appreciate all that you are doing to try to get this resolved. I am a kinetic sculptor and have have gears on the my mind for the last year or so and am really excited to start using Gearotic Motion.
Be Well,
John

Hi John,
I'm not the expert - but have you checked your backlash setting?

John:
I was just posting a question to ask what your backlas setting was when I saw the other John post the same question. ( Great minds think alike. :) )
Can you check that as a final check. Zero it, if it isnt zero. Backlash is added to the shat distance..if it isnt that then it must be a memory zeroing difference in the Mac system, if so Ill check deeper and find out where , but I need to know if your backlash is zero first. :)
Thx

Re: Problem placing gears in project.
Art,
Joy!
As I suspected the error was with the user. Somehow I had set the backlash to 12 inches and failed to notice. Reset backlash to zero and all was well.
A big thank you to Art and John T for figuring this one out. Another big thanks to Art for being so patient with a user who really should have spent more time reading the manual and paying attention to detail.
I look forward to many exciting gear based projects.
Thanks again and be well,
John
PS I originally posted this to the wrong thread, yep need to pay attention to the details.

and reduce support needs. Never hesitate to ask.
