Making a Ring

Hi Art

I am trying to make a ring that is 15.5 inches in diameter and has an inner diameter of 12.43 inches.

I've constructed a gear in GT that is the right outside diameter, I put it on the Project and strip the teeth.  The info on the side says its 15.5 inches but when I cut it I get a 15 inch outside diameter.  In order to get a finished outside diameter I have to "guess" at what the stripping will remove as there is no way to tell.

A second issue I have is on the inner annulus of the ring.  I would like it to be 12.4 inches but the program won't allow anything larger than 11.3.

Having fun
John

I never really planned on a planetary being stripped.. since the teeth arent on the outside
it will screw up. Stripping makes the circle to the pitch diameter which makes the two rings
intersect. You may have to wait for the cad module to do that one... Unless you make a normal
gear with a pitch diameter of  15.5 inches.. set the shaft diameter to 12.43 inches and THEN
strip the teeth.. that'd probably work..

Thanks Art,
I will certainly give that a try - Knowing it will strip to pitch diameter is a big help.

Hi Art,
There is still some sort of limitation on the shaft size - it appears to be limited to 12.27  where I would like 12.43 for my project.

I've used a spur gear with 800 teeth, because when I strip the teeth they are so small that I don't notice the change in diameter.

I can live with what I've got but thought you might like to know the shaft diameter limitation on the spur.

John:

Thx, glad the workaround helps. Hopefully it wont be long before I can just let you
draw two circles and extrude.. :)

Along the same lines, I need to make a circular disk and would like to use the same spokes as the rest of my project.  I tried setting the number of teeth to zero and really bad things happened.

Is being able to do stuff like this still in the works?

Hi:

To do that just make any gear with spokes, then , on the project tree right click the gear and select "Strip Teeth", and youll find you have that spoked ring.. :)

Now I remember, I thought the feature was there.  Before I asked I searched on "0" and "teeth" and racked my brain trying to recall.

Thanks Art.

Hi Art,
I don't want to reopen this particular issue as I have  workable work around as we have discussed above.

I would like to be able to create and "array" of pawls around the ratchet.  When I add either a ratchet or the "pinion" I get both the pawl and the ratchet added at the same time (either by clicking ratchet or clicking "pinion").  I would like to be able to put 5 pawls around the ratchet.  It is possible = sort of but I end up with 5 ratchets as well as the 5 pawls I want.

Another little issue is in arranging items on the workbench - if one overlays another I can't select the lower one to select or move it - I always get the top one.

Hi  John:

Ill add to my list to see if I can easily separate those two items from one item to separate
items for the purpose of machining...

Hi John:

I see I misunderstood. You can already machine multiple pawls.. you just cant have them on the project screen working..

Ill add this to my list for adding more around the ratchet.. but Im thinkin when I get to a cad module it may solve that itself..
