No resolutions

Post by Dave Sage »

I have an Asus laptop Win 8.1 with built in camera.
I'm seeing a few issues.

The camera seems to work but nothing shows up in the resolution pick dropdown.
When I turn on video sampling I get my face in one frame in the middle as a snap shot (no live video) I assume this is proper.
I left the acquisition speed at 250ms default and pushed the fire button. My whole screen switches to half black on the left and half white on the right. I see no way out of that. I used ctrl-alt-del to get the task manager and the black/white screen goes to one of a few windows and I can select the Gearotic screen again or the task manager. The black/white screen is still stuck as one of the available windows. Although the Gearotic screen seems functional but I don't think it's working properly. I finally stopped Gearotic with the task manager.

I haven't gone any further with it.

hope you can help. This looks very interesting.

Hi Sage:

Is this 2.298 in the help/about?

This is symptomatic of a camera system not responding properly to DirectShow..might be a Win8.1 issue, I havent tried it there
yet. Ill keep searching for this one.. You should have live video when you turn on video..one frame is a strange result.. means
its almost working..

Yes 2.298. I had to uninstall to get rid of the older version. An install over top did not update the program.
Windows 8.1 also complains about it being a suspicious program so I had to do the "install anyway" option.
I also restarted the machine after installation.

EDIT:
I ran it again this morning and it seems to be fine now except still no resolution options.
Motion video and on startup and when I press "fire" the screen goes through the black/white boxes in a fashion that looks like it's working and comes back with the profiles.
Hmmm

I'll check it out some more.

Thanks

Sounds like its working. Some will get resolutions, some will not. In order to see resolutions, the maker of the
camera had to supply a driver which responds to DirectShow interfacing. Some will, some wont. A driver update
can fix that depending on the camera.

Have fun,

I played around a bit more and discovered what is causing the frozen video screen.
Everything works ok until I'm tired of playing and I try to start over with another capture. I went and selected the camera again and instead of live video I got a snap shot in the center of the screen. From there things seems to go down hill. When I use the fire button the screen switches to half white/black and freezes. I have to use task manager to gain control again. Then I can close the black/white screen and get Gearotic back again. But it's still messed up and must be restarted.

Repost from another topic:

Hi:

Thx, Due to the rather extreme interest in this module, I am recoding the video capture section
and hopefully, the new code will solve its issues with other cameras. Originally I wrote this module for myself,
and since it worked with my LifeCam, I wasnt too concerned. Cant promise how long it will be, may be days,
may be hours. Ill post results as I go.

Thx

I have a lifecam cinema, new install last week with the latest drivers, and my resolutions (which were there before) also disappeared with 298.  Just finished installing 2982, and they're still gone.  It'll still capture at 640x480 with either version, although with the room lights on 2982 had issues and dished out part of my face, confidence 16.3 so maybe a mediocre capture.

Win 7 pro 32 bit.

And a random idea, is it worth it/hard to do do add a background removal by grabbing a shot with the old bald moose hiding from view and subtracting it from the desired capture?  No camera adjustment allowed in between?  Don't know if that autofocus would hose it up and make it worthless.

Kirk:

Background removal is partially helped with the ambient removal button on latest version. But subtraction as a raw
filter doesnt work well Im afraid for tecnical reasons.

Based on one users experience with not having resolutions till he installed LifeCam software.. Im thinking many things are going
on to stop resolutions from showing up..but since its changed form one version to the next Im obviously messing up somewhere. :)

I will issue a version with no limiting .. that means Ill accept every device just to see what happens.. the experience may show what the holdup is.. DirectShow is really a bear to use, and the alternatives wont work in XP.. so Ill keep on this one for a bit as I really want to make
sure XP is viable as an OS for this.
