Geneva Escapement

Post by John T »

Hi Art,
If you get really bored sometime in the future you might consider including a Geneva Escapement (I think that's the right name).  It looks to me like you already have most of the coding in GM but I could be wrong.

I have managed to make one of these in wood so I know it can be done in simple materials.

Hi John:

So I take it this is a kind of motor driven escapement, circular to periodic ?
Looks possible..

Hi Art,

Actually this is a watch mechanism.  It doesn't have any drive power in these photo. but the final edition was spring driven so it was just like a wrist watch except that it was 6 inches in diameter.  I also ran it on weights before I got the springs.

Second vote for this escapement. It is actually a Swiss Lever and is used in almost all modern mechanical watches.
The Geneva has a gearwheel that looks like a Maltese Cross

I agree, and it looks very cool. I will be totally rewriting the escapement, ( and very very soon ) so I will consider this type of escapement
for inclusion depending on information I can find to allow me to do so accurately.

That would be great. i am not an expert, watchmaking is just a hobby.  I do however have lots of watchmaking books and references that explain escapements in detail. Happy to look through those for any detail your own investigations don't turn up.
