Hi All;

New version 1.15 is online. It includes the release of the new noncirculars module.,
A video is at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTeOrCxq ... e=youtu.be
showing its usage. This is early on, bugs may exist. It has a alot of new code
so let me know if your badly affected.

Thx

Re: New version 1.15 of GT. - Updated

Post by ArtF »

Hi guys:

  Updated, same version.

-- Toothing 50% faster. Less chance of error.
-- Noncircular planetaries now working.

Few corrections from video:

1)  Tooth count is based on orders, if set to 20 teeth, a second order will have 40 teeth, not 20. :)
2)  It IS possible for toothing to mess up, if it does, try shifting the rack by .1 or .05 to see if it helps, it usually does. Its better
after todays fix, but still has a chance of making bad teeth, its a very complex thing to get right and be fast at the same time
so bear with me as it gets more stable over time.
3) You do NOT have to make rack smaller for backlash in planetaries anymore, the program now corrects that for you, so just make the
rack wider to add backlash.

New text added for ellipticals to show extents of gear for stock planning.

Known bugs:

Stars spoke type is not working properly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thx

Hi All:

So thats about it for Noncirculars for now I think. Im planning on doing Plateing next so that clocks and such
can be cased decoratively in boxing made by Gearotic. I will however be taking off on vacation shortly to get some sunlight
to refresh my batteries.  Once the weather improves Ill be taking the summer off for other than bug fixes to focus on a
project or two. Perhaps a new ticker or maybe something with some electronics thrown in that we can publish here as well.
We've been playing with Arduino's and such and are thinking of making something that looks cool, we're just not sure exactly
what as yet. :) I'll keep you posted on plans as they get developed.

I forgot to refresh my antifreeze in my workshop, so my laser tube shattered this winter, so next month I'll be putting in a new
CO2 tube.. that should be interesting... And they tell me theres no market for broken CO2 tubes..go figure...

Anyway.., have fun

Man, you're shop must have gotten really cold to be at −78.5 ?C (freezing temp of CO2) :)

So about July?  After the weekend blizzard (10 foot high snowdrifts) the temp here is headed back into the negative Fahrenheits.  Better weather might be skipping this year and waiting for 2015.

Go someplace warm soon, or more than that CO2'll be freezing.  After plating, although there's that whole Internet thing where you can work on the beach.

Actually, in a couple weeks Ill be laying on a Puerto Rico beach for seven days of forgetting all I know. ( that shouldn't take long..).

Then Ill consider exactly how the hell to do plating, I never liked GM's solution, too nasty to implement. Ill consider my options
for awhile before I set about doing that.

Glad you like them, every once in a while as I finish a module I think "Man, people'll like this one..", the non-circular was
such a module. I rewrote a bit of the spoking code to make them as nice as I could, and you'll find even the circular gears
spoking is a bit better under this version. The toothing speed amazed me when I figured a way to speed it up, its at least
10 times faster than GM and 10 times more accurate, I'm pretty pleased overall. GT is now starting to look like a proper
replacement for GM. Im slowly making actual headway. lol

Have fun

What's wrong with laying out on the floor of the bar and cut the middle man out ?

Hi Art,
I've been playing with non-circulars and am really impressed.

I can produce impossible gears with some funny drawings on the screen.

A suggestion might be to have a default button where the variables can all be put back to something that works.  I can get to a point where I can't remember what the "default" value was and the gears I'm producing aren't possible, and I can do that really quickly.  So a default or even a viable range for the variables would really help me.

You say on the video that the Nautilius gears are identical but on the simulation mine aren't exact and don't mesh (perhaps I'm out of the variable range)

Anyway that's my observations for now.

Thanks for the module!!

John:

Good point. I will institute a defaults button. For now though..

Set Pressure to 20, Eccen to .5, Mod Coef to 0.
Log pitch to .2, shift to 0, stub to 1, and width to .51

All should generate with those settings...

Hi Guys:

Program updated. Defaults button is added, and a meshing bug repaired.

Also, for the ones who do download the new version, do me a favor. Check the
options tab, at the bottom it should say.. "Cuda devices : n"

What is n on your machine? This tells you if you have any GPU's I could program
which do math about 100 times faster than your CPU. Where your computer may get
8 or 10 GigaFlops, a GPU can do up to 350GigaFlops. Im playing with programming
those devices and was curious if many of you had a nvideo card capable of it.
Most NVidea's should say their available.

Thx
