Support for Pin and Slot in Gearotic or GT

Post by SkyMoBot »

This may be of interest to exactly one person, me, but will GT support creation of pin and slot devices?  I use these on my Antikythera Mechanism models.  Right now I bring the gears into a CAD program and create the slots myself.  It's not difficult, but if I didn't have to do this step, life would be a little bit better and it would make what I view on the project screen that much closer to reality.

Googling pin and slot will show lots of examples, the paper On the Pin-and-Slot device of the Antikythera Mechanism, with a new application to the Superior Planets http://www2.ups.edu/faculty/jcevans/Carman%20Thorndike%20Evans.pdf shows the details and how many of these I have to work with.    It also details the math involved.

Your right, probably has low application, but remind me of this after release of GT. I will consider it
as one of several ways of doing weird mech's in the future. the largest impetus for this rewrite is so
I have the freedom to create different mechanisms that currently cannot be done. Ill keep this one in mind
as I try to invent interfaces that allow a person more freedom in this type of arena...

Bump.  Any possibility of pin and slot for the next dev cycle?

Hmm, I just reread that paper, I understand now what your asking for. I have to consider this one a bit. Really its a
relation to a 4 bar linkage..similar math and theory, almost like a planetary version of a normal 4bar link.

I will consider this, though I wont promise it as yet. ( Dont lose heart, I almost never promise, and usually when I do
the solution is already written or close to it. I hate vapourware and try not to promise unless Im sure I can deliver.
I am considering 4-bar linkages though, so it may be part of that section.
My plan is to do 3d toolpath output and Im unsure how that will affect plans, its a complex topic to do. A laser controller
is already in coding as well as a personal project and could eat some time. But 4-bar linkages are probably next to that
in what Id like to write, and Id consider a pin/slot to be a fair option to have in that type of output.
