I have been looking for info on making a worm gear and found this site http://jimshomeplanet.com/wormgear/wormgear.html
plus a YouTube video showing the actual machining. It isn't a heavy duty worm drive but works for light duty.
This looks like a viable way to make what I need and simple enough (yeah looks can be deceiving) I can do on my lathe.
So would be nice if Gearotic had a way to do the math given a number of teeth to make a blank. The screw or worm
is easy to do but figuring the blank diameter isn't.
Just a wish list item for now.
Thanks,
Bruce

Re: Worm gear making
Bruce;
Thanks for posting link, consider topic on wish list again, however for what it would take to make one of these, problem continues to be how do you cut it out in the end? 3D prints would work, but other than that, not sure what you could do without 4 or 5 axis?
Cheers
Bob :)

Re: Worm gear making
Calculation for a spur gear is number of teeth plus 2 divided by the DP of the gear to get the OD.
Same applies to worm gears but you add 3

Re: Worm gear making
Well been awhile since posting this thread but I have finally made 2 worm gears. Here is a picture, still need to
make the bracket to hold gear and driver. I used the info in the link I had originally posted. Haven't tried counting
the teeth, should be about 100. Will do that later just to verify how close I got but not critical.
