Gears Toys and Disney

Post by Stojan »

I don't know if anyone has seen this video but what a brilliant way of using gears for toys. It just makes me wonder if a plugin for something like this and Gearotic would be possible?
Just amazing at the complexity and simplicity..

I can't seem to find out anything further about this project that disney are doing, whether it is something that they have released commercially or its just simply a research paper that they have sponsored.

As a by the by has anyone designed an Orrery/Planetarium using Gearotic? if any files about that one could try.

Cheers
Steve

This software, seen by a lot of people, is proprietary as you can imagine. I imagine disney uses it
to design toys and animated characters in films..

It looks nightmarishly complex to write, while I understand what their doing, its not something
I think Id tackle, type of thing that takes a village to write I suspect. though I may dip my toes
in something similar though easier at some point in 4-bar linkages.

I dont have any files for an orrery, BUT the gear train calculator does have ratios in it for rotation of the
moon and such. An orrery woudol basically be a linkage of several gear train calc outputs based on
each planet.. fun to get it all running good I'll bet. :)

Good luck

Hey Art G'day,

Thank you for your reply, I will admit to being a little lazy hoping someone had the start of one already. I have a number of plans from the old mechano sets that I used to collect a very long time ago that can be converted.

The math is interesting to get the ratio's right and making a decent illusion of planet sizes.

Only thing I'm stuck on at the moment is designing a way to cut gears on my 4 axis cnc. Just not sure on the best way to go about it, I'm just interested in cutting brass material not very thick good enough to use for mechanical machinations such as orrerys.

Not very many examples of a 4 axis router being used as a gear cutter as well. I believe my spindle which is 3.5 hp should be adequate but I stand to be corrected.

Cheers and avagreatday,
Steve

Steve:

If the forth axis is a rotary table, then it should be no problem. Theres a video on
my youtube channel showing it being done, and Gearotics output makes it
pretty easy with a 4th axis. IF its thin brass you can even just cut then in 2.5d on the router.

Don't know if it helps, but I stumbled across this simple orrery on Thingiverse while googling "3d printed orrery".

I recently contacted Disney about another Disney Labs paper.  As you might expect they politely told me they're not sharing.

Hey Kirk G'day,

Thanks for sharing that, handy to have.. I was wondering about a solution for elliptical orbits, most orrery builds you see are just circular.

Politely you say lol....

Cheers,
Steve
